Based in Pittsburgh PA, GNC was initially David Shakarian's dream of a mini health store called Lackzoom which was launched in 1935 that specialized in yogurt, honey, grains and "healthy sandwiches".
Even when the trend of healthy food was slowly fading out at that time, people welcomed Lackzoom with open arms which allowed Shakarian to go on and open stores in various other states. Right in this expansion phase, he also renamed his chain to General Nutrition Centers which soon began producing its very own vitamins and nutritional supplements as well as foods, beverages and cosmetics. The name, GNC, became so successful that by the end of 1980s, the number of GNC locations had crossed over 1,000.
Although GNC lost its founder in 1984, the company has indefatigably continued to expand upon his dream.
